ABOUT THE TEAM
Cal Poly Hyperloop and Tunneling is a student-led club that consists of a broad range of Engineering, Computer Science and other STEM majors who are driven to research and develop a tunnel boring machine to participate in the Not-A-Boring competition. Our team focuses on teaching and learning from others, helping all members get experience through research, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing.
The club began in 2018 to participate in the 2019 International Hyperloop Pod Competition; a contest sponsored by SpaceX in which teams design and build sub-scale Hyperloop pods, which are propelled inside a one-mile long, partial-vacuum sealed tube. The club developed various technologies for Hyperloop, including magnetic levitation and linear induction motors, both designed and built in-house. We focus on developing cutting-edge and interesting technologies to both improve the club’s standing in competition, and to foster innovation and excitement.
Cal Poly Hyperloop & Tunneling is now preparing to compete in the Not-A-Boring Competition sponsored by The Boring Company and Elon Musk. Teams from around the world design small-scale tunnel boring machines to bore tunnels in Pflugerville, Texas, the location of the Boring Company headquarters. We believe this competition is the next logical extension of the Hyperloop ethos, in which teams are tasked with solving unique and exciting problems through competition. This undertaking is an exciting design shift, from linear induction motors and magnetic levitation to drill face and tunnel construction.
